This page will give you a little background into the role of Physician Assistants and how they fit into our Practice team.
Over the past 40 years, America has been training individuals as Physician Assistants to work alongside the doctors. Their role has now become integral to the American healthcare system, and this role is starting to be developed within the UK. This link gives further information on their role in America. The development of the profession in the UK has been led by the Department of Health and has involved the Royal College of Physicians and General Practitioners
Physician Assistants, commonly abbreviated to PA's, are Health Care Professionals who work to the medical model, as a Doctor does. This allows them to deliver care and to see and treat patients within the general practice team under defined levels of supervision. Their training gives them similar skills and knowledge to that of a Doctor, however they are qualified as Physician Assistants, not as Doctors.
We have four PA's employed but are in the process of expanding this aspect of our skill base with the appointment of further PA's. The use of Physician Assistants is a newly evolving role within the UK, and one where Saxonbrook is delighted to be at the forefront.
